Three Design Rules for Injection Molds
1. Injection design uses a uniform wall thickness throughout the part. This reduces residual stress, improves mold filling and cycle time. For uniform wall thickness design, there are some techniques for each part. Sink marks occur when plastic solidifies from the outside inward (near the mold surface). In thick sections, this causes internal tensile stress (due to shrinkage), which can lead to surface sinking and part warping. To minimize warping, transitions between wall thicknesses can be improved by using a slope.
2. Injection design is better with appropriate corner radii. The inner radius should be at least one material thickness.
3. Injection design should better suit the flow, material, or product design requirements. Using the minimum wall thickness ensures rapid cooling, short cycle times, and lightweight parts, leading to lower part costs. Injection design is better with ribs or gussets to improve part bending stiffness, avoiding the need for thick sections to achieve the same result, thereby saving weight, material cost, and cycle time cost.
