Three Design Rules for Injection Molds
First, injection design uses uniform wall thickness throughout the part. This will reduce residual stress, improve mold filling and cycle time. Perfect uniform wall thickness design has some tricks for each part. Sink marks occur when plastic solidifies from the outside inward (near the mold surface), in thick sections this causes internal tensile stress (due to shrinkage), which can lead to surface sink marks and part warping. To minimize warping, transitions between wall thicknesses can be improved by using a slope.
Second, injection design is better with appropriate corner radii. The inner corner radius should be at least one material thickness.
Third, injection design is better suited to the flow, material, or product design requirements. Using the minimum wall thickness ensures rapid cooling, short cycle times, and lightweight, which leads to lower part costs. Injection design is better with ribs or gussets to improve part bending stiffness, thus avoiding the use of thick sections to achieve the same result, saving part weight, material cost, and cycle time cost.
