Wood chip and bark organic fillers were widely adopted in the early stages of introducing biological deodorization technology in sewage treatment plants in China due to their low cost and easy availability, with numerous application examples.
Characteristics of wood chip filler:
It has a large specific surface area, providing extensive contact area between pollutants and microorganisms, which is conducive to microbial adhesion, biofilm formation, and growth, maintaining a high microbial population; it facilitates the mass transfer process of oxygen and nutrients required for microbial metabolism, as well as the removal of metabolic waste.
The surface is rough, promoting microbial attachment and growth; the total porosity is as high as 70%, offering ample space for microbial habitation and pollutant adsorption, effectively trapping and adsorbing toxic gases on the wood chips, with properties essentially similar to bark.
It is derived from nature, a renewable organic material, and causes no secondary pollution to the environment.
