1. Introduction to Sludge Testing

Sludge refers to the sediment, particulate matter, and floating materials generated during the treatment of wastewater by physical, chemical, physicochemical, and biological methods. Sludge generally denotes a thick substance between liquid and solid, which can be transported by pumps but is difficult to separate into solid and liquid through sedimentation. The suspended solids concentration is typically between 1% and 10%; below this concentration, it is often referred to as slurry.

Sludge testing involves sampling and analyzing sludge to determine the types and concentrations of pollutants within it.

Sludge identification entails distinguishing the hazardous characteristics of sludge based on test results, determining whether the sludge is general solid waste or hazardous waste.

2. Sludge Classification

(1) Based on its source, sludge can be categorized as:

Municipal sludge: Primarily refers to sludge from sewage treatment plants, which constitutes the largest volume of sludge. Additionally, sludge from water treatment plants, also originating from municipal facilities, can be included in this category.

Pipeline sludge: Sludge from drainage collection systems.

River and lake sediment: Silt from rivers and lakes.

Industrial sludge: Mixtures of solids, water, oil, chemical contaminants, and organic matter generated from various industrial production processes.

(2) Based on different wastewater treatment methods, sludge can be classified as:

Primary sludge: Sediment produced during the primary treatment of wastewater.

Activated sludge: Sediment generated in the secondary settling tank of the activated sludge treatment process.

Humus sludge: Sediment produced in the secondary settling tank of biofilm treatment processes (such as biological filters, rotating biological contactors, and some biological contact oxidation tanks).

Chemical sludge: Sludge generated after chemically enhanced primary treatment (or tertiary treatment).

Sedimentation sludge: Sludge intercepted in primary sedimentation tanks, including physical sedimentation sludge, coagulated sedimentation sludge, and chemical sedimentation sludge.

Ash fusibility testing: Deformation temperature, softening temperature, hemispherical temperature, flow temperature, etc.
