The primary function of the aluminum anode on the steel pile is to prevent electrochemical corrosion of the steel pile and extend its service life.

Aluminum anodes operate based on electrochemical principles; specifically, they protect the steel pile by sacrificing themselves. In an electrolyte (such as seawater), the aluminum anode has a lower electrode potential, so it dissolves preferentially and releases electrons. These electrons flow through the electrolyte to the surface of the steel pile, lowering the potential on the steel pile's surface and thereby inhibiting the corrosion reaction.

Working Principle of Aluminum Anodes

1. Installation and Connection: Aluminum anodes are securely installed on steel piles through welding, bolting, or other methods to ensure good electrical connection.
2. Formation of a Corrosion Cell: When the aluminum anode and steel pile are surrounded by seawater, they form an electrochemical corrosion cell with the seawater. The aluminum anode acts as the anode, and the steel pile acts as the cathode.
3. Anode Dissolution and Electron Release: Under the influence of the corrosion cell, the aluminum anode dissolves and releases electrons. These electrons flow through the seawater to the surface of the steel pile, lowering the potential on the steel pile's surface and inhibiting corrosion.
4. Cathodic Polarization and Protection: With the continuous inflow of electrons, the potential on the steel pile's surface continues to decrease, reaching a state of cathodic polarization, which significantly inhibits the corrosion reaction.
5. Formation of a Corrosion Product Film: During the anode dissolution process, a dense corrosion product film forms on the surface of the aluminum anode. This film slows down the dissolution rate of the anode to some extent and extends its service life.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Aluminum Anodes

  • High Electrochemical Activity: Aluminum alloys have high electrochemical activity, allowing them to quickly become the anode in a corrosion cell, dissolve preferentially, and release electrons.
