The gate of a wedge-type slide gate valve can be made as a single unit, known as a rigid gate, or designed to allow slight deformation to improve manufacturability and compensate for deviations in the sealing surface angle during processing—this is called a flexible gate. When the slide gate valve is closed, the sealing surfaces can rely solely on medium pressure for sealing, meaning the medium pressure presses the gate's sealing surfaces against the opposite valve seat to ensure a seal, which is known as self-sealing. Most slide gate valves use forced sealing, meaning that when the valve is closed, external force is required to press the gate against the valve seat to ensure sealing. Slide gate valve sealing structures can be divided into soft seal and hard seal types.
