How to Avoid Water Quality Deterioration During Pure Water Storage?

1. Regularly Clean the Water Tank

Water Tank Cleaning Steps:

Cleaning Agent Preparation: Dissolve analytical pure NaOH at a concentration of 4 grams per liter in a beaker, then pour it into the water tank. For a 30-liter tank, add 120 grams of NaOH, and ensure proper safety precautions.

Note: Do not use brushes, cloths, or other tools to contact the inside of the tank to avoid surface damage, which can promote bacterial growth.

Time Preparation: The NaOH solution should soak in the tank for at least one hour. After draining all waste liquid, rinse with water produced by the pure water system (fill the tank to full capacity) until the pH of the water in the tank becomes neutral. (Typically, rinsing three times will restore normal pH levels.)

Tips:

(1) If environmental protection is a concern, use an equivalent amount of HCl to neutralize the NaOH before discharging the waste liquid.

(2) During cleaning, flat-bottom tanks cannot be completely emptied. The remaining water can create a moist environment, which is a source of bacterial growth. It is recommended to use conical-bottom tanks to drain all water completely.

2. Install an Air Filter

Most water storage tanks have a vent to allow air circulation during water extraction. The vent draws in external air along with CO2, bacteria, particles, and volatile organic compounds from the laboratory air, all of which can contaminate the pure water stored in the tank. It is recommended to equip the vent with an air filter to prevent organic matter, bacteria, and CO2 from entering the tank.


3. Install a Disinfection Module

Due to the rapid reproduction rate of microorganisms, even a small amount of residual microbes can form a biofilm, leading to water quality deterioration. Therefore, installing a disinfection module (UV lamp) that inhibits bacterial growth is crucial.

4. Avoid High Temperatures and Direct Sunlight

Most components in laboratory ultrapure water systems are made of food-grade materials, which are not highly resistant to temperature. Prolonged exposure to sunlight or high temperatures can accelerate bacterial growth and reproduction.

5. Use Immediately After Collection

Ultrapure water is easily contaminated by the environment after collection, so it is most appropriate to collect water immediately before use (use immediately after collection). Only by minimizing the time ultrapure water is exposed to the environment can high-purity ultrapure water be obtained. When collecting water, allow the ultrapure water to flow along the side of the container to minimize bubble formation, which can reduce air contamination. Note: Do not connect hoses after the terminal filter; use direct collection methods to obtain high-purity ultrapure water.

6. Storage Time

When collecting ultrapure water, always discard the initial outflow to ensure stable water quality. When preparing high-purity chemical reagents, avoid using ultrapure water that has been stored in a tank for a long time. Over time, tanks can become contaminated with impurities and microorganisms, leading to water quality deterioration. Such water is no longer ultrapure when used.
