In recent years, biomass power plants have become increasingly common, and the safe storage of biomass fuel piles is a serious issue for the entire biomass industry. Temperature measurement is crucial in the protection of fuel piles, and the effectiveness of temperature measurement directly relates to safety assurance. Therefore, a suitable temperature measurement instrument for biomass fuel piles is essential. Currently, most biomass power plants rely on manual insertion of temperature probes into the fuel piles for temperature measurement. While this method may work for fuels like wood chips and rice or wheat straw, it is ineffective for denser materials such as tree bark, where manual insertion of probes into the center of the pile is impossible, compromising temperature measurement accuracy and posing safety risks.

To effectively prevent related incidents, our company has introduced a yard temperature monitoring terminal that enables real-time temperature monitoring of material piles. This is essential for preventing and addressing the widespread issue of spontaneous combustion in storage yards, reducing economic losses, maintaining corporate image, and protecting the environment.

The yard temperature monitoring terminal is a specialized instrument system designed to measure the internal temperature of material piles. Using this system is a key method for temperature management in storage yards, as it allows for timely detection of internal heating conditions, enabling early intervention to eliminate the risk of spontaneous combustion and prevent severe consequences.

The process of acquiring fuel for power plants is more complex compared to other material recycling, involving multiple steps such as collection, crushing, packaging, and transportation. If the fuel's moisture content increases during these processes, it poses a potential risk of spontaneous combustion. The biomass power plant fuel anti-spontaneous combustion/wireless temperature measurement system addresses several scenarios: inadequate drainage facilities in the storage yard leading to water accumulation and fuel soaking; insufficient covering measures for the fuel pile; and low pile foundations causing water to flow back into the bottom of the pile.

Considering the diverse sources and variations in raw materials for many piles, a strategy of inserting multiple temperature measurement cables per batch can be adopted. This approach allows for better reflection of the heating and spontaneous combustion conditions of that batch. Through joint research with a university, our company conducted continuous long-term monitoring of spontaneous combustion temperatures in ground piles, collecting nearly 100,000 temperature data points at different depths and during pre-combustion states (including steam emission, smoke, and dense smoke). Analysis of this data revealed certain patterns between pile temperature and depth that can serve as a reference. When the temperature at a measurement point reaches a preset warning level, the software triggers an alarm, prompting immediate on-site action. Based on the location description of the measurement point, the spontaneous combustion spot can be identified nearby. The affected pile should be promptly opened, cooled, re-compacted, and the temperature measurement cable reinserted to continue monitoring.

If spontaneous combustion occurs under strong wind conditions, the fire's scope and severity can worsen, leading to unpredictable adverse consequences.
