Softening agents are chemical substances that can alter the static and dynamic friction coefficients of fibers. When the static friction coefficient is modified, the touch feels smooth and facilitates movement on fibers or fabrics; when the dynamic friction coefficient is adjusted, the fine structures between fibers become easier to move relative to each other, meaning the fibers or fabrics are more pliable. The combined sensation of both effects is softness.

Softening finishing is an important post-treatment process in dyeing and printing. During processing, textiles often become rough to the touch after multiple treatments, with synthetic fiber fabrics generally performing worse, especially microfiber fabrics. To endow fabrics with a soft, smooth, and comfortable hand feel, finishing is necessary, and the widespread method currently is using softening agents. Additionally, softening agents are extensively used in chemical fiber spinning, as well as in the spinning and weaving processes of various fibers. This is because, with the increased adoption of high-speed and low-liquor-ratio methods in textile processing, friction between fabrics and between fabrics and equipment intensifies, leading to issues such as abrasion and streaks. Using softening agents allows fibers to possess the appropriate softness and smoothness for the processing conditions, thereby preventing damage.
