The Bronze Chariot and Horses date back to the Qin Dynasty (approximately 221–207 BC) and served as a means of transportation. They were unearthed in December 1980 in Lintong, at the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor, and are now housed in the Emperor Qinshihuang's Mausoleum Site Museum in Lintong, Shaanxi. The four horses have square heads, round eyes, short ears, flat backs, and rounded hindquarters, appearing robust and powerful. Their hooves are firmly planted on the ground, as if ready to move forward. The bronze charioteer extends his hands forward to hold the reins, with eyes slightly open, gazing downward ahead, focused and solemn, reflecting the image of a skilled driver. The Bronze Chariot and Horses offer multifaceted insights and are truly a world-class treasure.

      This chariot is also known as a performance chariot. Inside the chariot stands a circular bronze figure—a bronze-cast official wearing a crown, a long robe, and carrying a long sword. He stands in the chariot, holding the reins of the four horses in front, as if ready to gallop. Around 2000 BC, China entered the Bronze Age. Bronze ware is one of the great creations in Chinese arts and crafts. The entire history of bronze ware development, from the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties to the Qin and Han dynasties, can be divided into approximately thirteen periods: the Xia Dynasty corresponds to the Erlitou Culture period; the Shang, Western Zhou, and Spring and Autumn periods are each divided into early, middle, and late stages; the Warring States period is divided into early and middle-late stages; and the Qin and Han dynasties represent the twilight of bronze ware development.
