Function and Application Areas

The Lightning Surge Protector MC 50-B VDE is a pluggable multi-layer spark gap device. The unit consists of 9 layers of spark gaps, which are formed by stacking 10 high-energy graphite electrode discs together. High-heat-resistant Teflon spacer rings reliably ensure the internal safety distance of the spark gaps. Bolt-fixed die-cast zinc metal connection plates combine the spark gaps and clamp them in precise positions. Eight of the nine spark gap layers are controlled by high-capacity capacitors, ensuring an accurately set protection level voltage of ≤2 kV.
Due to its unique sealed design structure, the Lightning Surge Protector MC50-B VDE produces no arc leakage even during operation. Therefore, no additional space for arc leakage needs to be reserved during installation.
This surge protector fully meets the requirements for Class B devices according to standard DIN VDE 0675 Part 6 (Draft 11.89) A1, A2, as well as the requirements for Class I surge protectors according to standard IEC 61643-1 (02.98). The device is designed for use between Zone 0 and Zone 1 (based on the lightning protection zone definitions in IEC 61312-1).
For lightning protection installation projects in buildings, the Surge Protector MC 50-B VDE provides equipotential bonding for lightning protection on power lines. The protector has successfully passed tests according to lightning current parameters (based on ENV 61024-1 and IEC 61024-1).
When lightning strikes an overhead line, the Lightning Controller MC 50-B VDE provides sufficient protection, making it suitable for use in power supply systems where electricity is introduced into buildings via overhead lines.

Installation

The housing dimensions of the Lightning Surge Protector MC 50-B VDE meet the space-saving 17.5mm width module requirement, making the device easy to install. Simple installation is achieved by snapping onto a 35mm rail. The L, N, and PE terminals of the MC 50-B VDE provide two connection ports, facilitating Kelvin wiring.
Note: Because the spark gaps of this protector are encapsulated, no arc leakage occurs outside the housing during operation, so no additional space for arc leakage needs to be reserved during installation.
