Sintering is the process of heating powder or powder compacts to a temperature below the melting point of their primary components, followed by cooling to room temperature using specific methods and rates. The outcome of sintering is the bonding between powder particles, which increases the strength of the sintered body, transforming the aggregate of powder particles into a coalesced mass of grains. This results in products or materials with the desired physical and mechanical properties.

What is Sintering Mixture

Sintering mixture, also known as sinter feed, refers to the raw materials used in the iron ore sintering process. It consists of iron-bearing materials, fluxes, fuels, and other components.

Iron-bearing materials include ore powder with high iron content and particle size <5mm, iron concentrate, blast furnace dust, rolling scale, steel slag, etc. The flux is primarily dolomite.

Moisture Requirements for Sintering Mixture

Sintering mixture, also called sinter feed, comes in various types. During production, factories must control its appropriate moisture content, typically around 5.5%. In sintering production, raw materials need to be uniformly mixed and appropriately moistened with water, which aids in pellet formation and improves the permeability of the mixture. Generally, an appropriate range of moisture fluctuations significantly impacts pellet formation, thereby influencing the quality of the sintered ore.

How to Measure Moisture in Sintering Mixture

Depending on the operational conditions in laboratories and industrial settings, two different methods are used to measure the moisture content of sintering mixtures. Typically, sintering plant laboratories primarily use manual methods with drying moisture analyzers. In the sintering production process, online automatic moisture analyzers are mainly employed to quickly detect moisture content in real-time, ensuring fully automated optimization of the sintering process and helping to improve the economic efficiency of steel (metallurgical) enterprises. In laboratories, halogen rapid moisture analyzers are commonly used to monitor the moisture content of sintering mixtures.

How to Use the Sintering Mixture Moisture Analyzer

The sintering mixture moisture tester, also known as the sinter feed moisture analyzer, is simple to operate and completes measurements in just two steps. First, in the 0.000 state, take 3-5g of sinter feed and spread it evenly in the sample pan. Then, cover the heating chamber and press the start button to begin heating and drying. At the end of the test, the instrument automatically displays the moisture content of the sintering mixture.

Significance of Moisture Detection in Sintering Pellet Mixture

Moisture content in sintering pellet mixture is one of the parameters that must be strictly controlled in metallurgical sintering production, as it directly affects the efficiency of sintering production. If the moisture content of the sintering mixture is too low, the bonding force between particles is weak, making it impossible for the ground ore powder and other additives to agglomerate into pellets of a certain size. This results in poor permeability of the sintering layer and limits production efficiency. If the moisture content is too high, although pellet formation improves, excess free water precipitates in the cold material layer of the sintering bed, causing local over-wetting of the material and reduced permeability, which also impacts production efficiency. Therefore, effectively controlling the moisture content of the sintering mixture has always been a goal pursued by sintering production departments.
