Ecdysterone, also known as molting hormone, has the chemical formula C??H??O? and is extracted from the roots of the plant Cyanotis arachnoidea in the Commelinaceae family. Depending on its purity, it appears as a white, off-white, pale yellow, or light brown crystalline powder. It is odorless, hygroscopic, and its color gradually darkens upon exposure to light. It is readily soluble in ethanol.
