Asphalt concrete, commonly known as bituminous concrete, is a mixture made by manually selecting and proportioning mineral aggregates with a certain gradation, such as crushed stone or crushed gravel, stone chips or sand, and mineral powder, mixed with a certain proportion of road asphalt material under strictly controlled conditions. As a seamless continuous pavement, asphalt concrete is widely used in highway surface layers due to its sufficient mechanical strength, adaptability to various traffic loads, smooth and comfortable driving, low noise, and convenient maintenance. After long-term use, localized issues such as rutting, cracking, pitting, and potholes may appear on asphalt pavements, severely affecting their performance and service life. The most commonly used maintenance technique currently is milling and paving.

1. Milling

For milling asphalt pavements on highways, large milling machines with automatic depth control should be used. Brands such as Wirtgen and Sany milling machines are examples. Before construction, the milling scope is determined based on the actual condition of the pavement damage, and the milling lines are marked on-site. The number of milling machines is determined according to the project's milling requirements, and milling is carried out sequentially from one end of the section to be milled. Milling should be completed in one go as much as possible, with no pauses except for special reasons. The waste material from milling is directly conveyed by the milling machine's conveyor belt to transport vehicles, which then transport it to designated locations for processing. Since the asphalt waste produced by milling machines is relatively uniform and has certain economic value, it can be reused as raw material for asphalt thermal recycling or as raw material for cement-stabilized crushed stone.

2. Paving

Paving of asphalt pavement should be carried out in accordance with the methods and requirements for asphalt concrete pavement construction. The target mix ratio and production mix ratio of asphalt concrete are determined according to the "Technical Specifications for Construction of Highway Asphalt Pavements" JTG F40-2004, and the implementation mix ratio is applied.
