Calcium stearate is produced by the reaction of calcium chloride with a mixture of stearic acid and sodium palmitate. It is washed with water to remove sodium chloride, resulting in calcium stearate, a white powder that is insoluble in water and cold ethanol, soluble in hot benzene, benzene, turpentine, and other organic solvents, and slightly soluble in hot ethanol. It decomposes slowly when heated to 400°C, is flammable, decomposes into stearic acid and the corresponding calcium salt when exposed to strong acids, and is hygroscopic.

Usage Description:

Stabilizer; lubricant; paint flatting agent; lubricant for pencil leads; plastic release agent; building waterproofing agent; thickener for lubricating oil; halogen absorber for polypropylene and polyethylene.

Used as a heat stabilizer for polyvinyl chloride and a lubricant and release agent in various plastic processing applications. In rigid products, it can improve the gelation speed when combined with basic lead salts and lead soaps. It is also used in food packaging, medical devices, and other applications requiring non-toxic soft films and utensils. It can also serve as a halogen absorber for polyethylene and polypropylene to eliminate the adverse effects of residual catalysts on color and stability. In rubber processing, it acts as a plasticizer, softening natural and synthetic rubber with almost no effect on vulcanization. It is also used as a lubricant for polyolefin fibers and molded plastics, a thickener for lubricating greases, a waterproofing agent for textiles, a flatting agent for paints, a plasticizer in the production of plastic records, and in pencil lead manufacturing, as well as in the pharmaceutical and fragrance industries.
