1. Concept of Green Building Materials

Green building materials refer to high-quality construction products characterized by "energy efficiency, emission reduction, low carbon, safety, convenience, and recyclability" throughout their entire life cycle, with minimal resource and energy consumption and low ecological environmental impact. The development of green building materials is a primary direction for the transformation and upgrading of the building materials industry and an inevitable choice for supply-side structural reform. It serves as a crucial support for green development in urban and rural construction and the building of beautiful villages.

2. What is the Current Development Status of Green Building Materials in China?

Currently, China's green building materials industry is continuously expanding in scale and improving in quality and efficiency.

(1) Rapid growth in industry scale: In 2023, the operating revenue of green building materials is expected to exceed 200 billion yuan, with a year-on-year increase of approximately 10%.

(2) Rapid development of industrial clusters: There are over 100 industrial parks or clusters nationwide primarily engaged in building sanitary ceramics, new building materials, and stone products, with 9 national new industrialization demonstration bases for green building materials cultivated.

(3) Continuous enrichment of product varieties: Component-based and functional green building materials suitable for various application scenarios, such as prefabricated buildings, prefabricated decoration, sponge cities, and ecological environment restoration, are continuously emerging.

(4) Expanding application scope: The pilot provinces for the green building materials下鄉(xiāng) (rural promotion) activity have reached 12, and the number of cities implementing policies where government procurement supports green building materials to enhance building quality has reached 48.

(5) Gradual improvement of standards and certification: China has taken the lead in establishing a green building materials product certification system, with evaluation standards developed for 58 types of products, including building doors and windows, sanitary ware, and waterproof materials. By the end of 2023, the total number of green building materials certification certificates exceeded 9,500.

3. What Are the Characteristics of Green Building Materials?

(1) The raw materials used in the production of green building materials are waste-utilizing, with minimal use of primary resources, and the extraction process does not cause damage to the environment or ecology.

(2) The wastewater, waste residue, and exhaust gases generated during the production of green building materials meet environmental protection requirements, and energy consumption during production and processing is minimized. The production of high-energy-consumption materials does not align with the requirements of green building.

(3) Green building materials exhibit comprehensive functionality during use (such as thermal insulation performance, sound insulation performance, service life, etc.), and are characterized by health, hygiene, safety, absence of harmful gases, and absence of harmful radioactivity.

(4) At the end of their service life, green building materials do not cause secondary pollution when discarded and can be reused.
