EGFR is a member of the epidermal growth factor receptor family. EGFR is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein that can bind to a series of family ligands, including EGF (epidermal growth factor), amphiregulin (bimodulin), and TGF- α Transforming Growth Factor- α Subunits, betacellulin, etc. EGFR plays an important role in regulating pathways such as cell proliferation, survival, and differentiation. EGFR binds ligands to induce homologous or heterologous dimerization, which is followed by tyrosine self phosphorylation and activation of various downstream pathways: mitogen activating protein (MAPK), phosphatidylinositol kinase-3 (PI3K) - Akt (PI3K/PKB), and signal transduction and transcription factor 3 (STAT). In addition, EGFR signaling also has an impact on cancer progression and disease progression, therefore EGFR is currently considered a target for cancer treatment.
